Japanese automotive brand Nissan has filed four?trademark applications to the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), covering its Infiniti, Nismo and Nissan brands. The filings reveal the company’s plans to create virtual goods, collectables, and an NFT marketplace.

A detailed analysis of the recent applications suggests that Nissan may plan to create?virtual clothes and headgear, virtual cars, trading cards, toys, and tickets, as well as downloadable online “entertainment services” such as video, images, artwork, audio, sounds, music, in the form of NFTs. That also presupposes?online NFT marketplaces, NFT minting, trading and storing software.

Another intended product is “non-downloadable computer software for use as a digital wallet,” according to the filing.

Meanwhile, Nissan’s Japanese unit has already started testing some metaverse advertising and sales-enabling services. It is currently conducting a three-month “demonstration experiment” of the virtual store “Nissan Hype Lab” designed to “study, consult, test drive, and purchase Nissan vehicles” in the metaverse.

The trial provides the company with new sales methods and avenues. It started on?Mar. 8 and will continue up to Jun. 30, enabling customers to visit the virtual storefront via a PC or smartphone.

The metaverse store gives Nissan customers an opportunity to create their own customized avatars and interact with virtual sales staff. Besides, clients can make an order for the car and even finalize purchase contracts through this virtual sales office.

Despite the ongoing crypto bear market, businesses and corporations are still looking into the future, seeking opportunities to expand their services with trademark applications on Web3, crypto, nonfungible tokens (NFTs), and the Metaverse.

Governments across the globe are also considering Web3 opportunities. For instance, South Korea has recently launched Metaverse Fund to support the growth of metaverse initiatives in the country.

Pursuing its Web3 ambitions in Japan is easier for Nissan, since the country is largely supportive of the technology. Late February, leading Japanese banks and tech companies joined the Metaverse Economic Zone project to provide payments, authentication, and insurance services for users across platforms.
