India donated 100,000 COVID-19 vaccines to Nigeria

100,000 doses of Covishield vaccines have been donated by the Government of India to Nigeria.

The vaccine doses were then delivered by the High Commission of India to the National Primary Health Care Development Agency.

The 100,000 COVID-19 vaccine doses are manufactured by the Serum Institute of India, Pune. This is the largest vaccine manufacturing firm globally. The donated vaccines were received on 26th March at the Abuja airport.

According to the report, the Covishield vaccine is the first COVID-19 vaccine approved by NAFDAC, Nigeria. On March 2, 2021, the first lot of 3.92 million doses of vaccines had reached Nigeria in terms of the COVAX program.

PaySpace Magazine anticipates that the act of COVID-19 vaccine donations worldwide is likely to accelerate the vaccination rate. However, clinical trials showed that Covishield (aka AstraZeneneca) is not effective against particular COVID-19 variants, including South African. Since Nigeria and South Africa share the same continent, the risk of contracting South African variant is particularly high among the Nigerians. We expect that even though the country gets additional doses of Covishield, the vaccination efficacy won’t to reach the desired level.
