According to a report by journalists, as part of a joint project between a technology giant with a long history and the developer of the world’s most popular chatbot based on artificial intelligence ChatGPT, an AI supercomputer, which was named Stargate, will be used. According to preliminary information, the launch of the supercomputer is scheduled for 2028.

According to insider materials published by the media, Microsoft will fully finance the process of implementing a joint project with OpenAI. It is expected that the joint efforts of the startup and the technology giant, if successful, will significantly reduce the cost of even the largest data centers.

Stargate will be one of the most powerful in the series of supercomputers that Microsoft and OpenAI plan to elaborate on. The media clarifies that the capabilities of this machine will largely depend on the ability of the ChatGPT developer to roll out the next major update, which is expected to debut in early 2025.

Microsoft and OpenAI have not yet responded to a media request for a joint project. This means that the construction of the data center has not been officially confirmed and belongs to the category of potentially possible, but not guaranteed events.

Currently, major tech giants are taking part in a kind of battle for generative artificial intelligence. The firm that becomes the unequivocal leader in this tacit but obvious confrontation will receive benefits that are not commensurate with anything in terms of the scale of the positive impact on subsequent prospects.

John Licato, associate professor of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of South Florida, said during a conversation with media representatives that Google is one of the contenders to win the battle for generative artificial intelligence. According to him, the realistic prospects of this technology giant are related to the company’s institutional expertise and access to computing power and data. Google Gemini artificial intelligence models, in particular Gemini 1.5 Pro, offer consumers a context window with up to a million tokens. In this case, users are given access to longer contexts compared to the GPT-4 limit, which is 128,000 tokens.

John Licato also noted that Google has a lot of experience working with transformers, the technology on which ChatGPT is based. Moreover, the technology giant has access to data that few companies can compete with. According to him, Meta and Anthropic are also important players in the context of the struggle for generative artificial intelligence.

John Licato says that currently within the framework of the specified rivalry, the significant aspect is access to huge computing power. Google and OpenAI have GPU processors worth millions and possibly billions of dollars. These AI industry players also have access to more advanced computing technologies such as tensor processing units (TPUs).

It is worth noting that during the period of active development and implementation of AI, the issue of cybersecurity is being actualized.
