Walmart to Launch New Prepaid Phone Service

Walmart is expanding its prepaid phone plan offerings with MobileX, a wireless service launched this year by Boost co-founder Peter Adderton.

Walmart to Launch New Prepaid Phone Service

Walmart will become MobileX’s first and exclusive retail partner. The relevant information is contained in a joint statement of the companies, which was published last Tuesday, September 26.

MobileX, which uses the Verizon Communications network under a wholesale agreement, has been available on Walmart’s website and in stores since September 26. In this case, users are offered unlimited tariff plans with pay-as-you-go. In this case, one of the payments starts from $14.88 per month. A cheaper tariff plan with customizable offers starts at $4.08 per month.

The guide based on artificial intelligence can predict the needs of customers in data. Also, this technology is able to configure tariff plans taking into account the specifics of their use scenarios. The relevant information is contained in the companies’ statement.

Peter Adderton, commenting on the interaction with the trade giant, said that his firm is pleased to cooperate with the largest retailer of prepaid wireless communications in the United States. He stated that consumers are losing the opportunity to choose, and brands like MobileX are returning this opportunity to them.

In the last two years, major telecom operators have been buying prepaid service providers. For example, in 2021 Verizon became the owner of Tracfone. The acquisition of Mint Mobile by T-Mobile US is also currently awaiting regulatory approval.

The collaboration with Walmart allows MobileX, launched online in February this year, to become a more visible alternative to the more expensive monthly tariffs offered by the three largest wireless carriers. At the same time, experts believe that it will be difficult for companies providing cheap mobile communication services to achieve market superiority over providers of solutions that provide for a larger volume of consumer costs. This assumption is explained by the fact that many subscribers are tied to two- and three-year tariff plans for paying for telephone services. Many users say that switching to other offers involves significant hassle, which, in their opinion, is not compensated by saving.

Mehrdad Akbar, vice president of merchandising for the Walmart US wireless network, said that the company is pleased to offer customers a new approach to mobile phone tariff plans thanks to the innovations, individualization, and reliability provided by MobileX.

The retail giant has already established partnerships with several mobile service providers, including Boost Mobile, which is part of Dish Network Corp’s ownership structure, Verizon Straight Talk, Total Wireless, and AT&T’s prepaid offer.

Walmart’s competitor Amazon sells SIM cards for Boost Mobile along with other prepaid data plans.

Roger Entner of Recon Analytics stated that Boost is a potential breakthrough player in Amazon, and MobileX could become a similar player in Walmart. He also noted that Peter Adderton is a bright figure in sphere wireless communications, and it’s worth watching him.

MobileX currently offers 5 gigabytes of high-speed data on a data plan for $14.88 per month. Also, the company’s customers have access to 30 gigabytes of data on offer for $24.88.
