Continente has launched its first cashierless store. The Portuguese-based supermarket chain opened the store in Lisbon. Customers can now access the store as well as pay for their items via a QR code from their phones. The QR code is generated in Continente’s Labs app. Customers will not even need to use a checkout option or even scan their goods.

The store is open to anyone who has the Continente Labs App installed on their phone. The app is compatible with both iOS and Android. The app registration is mandatory since it is used to allow entry to the store. Customers must also have the Continente Pay Card App with Continente Pay. This allows them to automatically activate the electronic invoices and make payments on their phone.

To track the purchases, the Labs store uses both sensors and cameras and adds the purchases to a virtual basket. If a customer replaces an item from the virtual basket, the purchase is removed from the virtual basket. Consumers then receive an invoice (electronic) after which they pay for the items purchased.

In 2019, Albert Heijn, a Dutch supermarket opened its initial autonomous mini-supermarket. And in October 2020, Monoprix, a French retail store initiated the testing of an autonomous self-service store. The company used AI product recognition to test the workability of a self-service store.

We’ve reported that Swedes can now shop in unmanned grocery stores.
