According to Ecommerce News, 58% of European checkouts have at least 3 basic errors, which could complicate the checkout process for shoppers.

Stripe, the US-based tech company, reviewed the top 450 e-commerce websites across the UK, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Italy, and Sweden.

In fact, 42% of them cannot automatically verify the card number as it was entered. Along with that, 29% face the absence of a numerical keypad for entering card numbers on mobile devices. What is more, 39% allow transactions to be submitted with incorrect card numbers or expiry dates.

The report highlighted that in Italy 2/3 of the analyzed websites didn’t confirm the card type when a card number was entered. In addition, 56% didn’t automatically verify the card number.

As to the Netherlands, half of the checkout pages didn’t confirm the card type, whereas 56% let customers attempt to pay with an expired card date.

Checkouts in France performed the worst, with about 4 in 10 not accepting numbers without spaces.

Customers should be able to enter card numbers how they want (with or without spaces) and not encounter any errors. Although it is recommended, however, to allow card numbers to be entered with spaces, or visually separated into groupings of four digits, for easier data validation

We’ve reported that the overall online cross-border market in Europe represented a turnover of €108.75 billion in 2019. That’s an increase of 14.4% compared to one year before.
